This page is dedicated to the patterns of stock carving and decoration which were so desirable on the German sporting rifles and shotguns prior to World War II.

The 1958 Gun Digest contained a article by Hal Hartley about Stock Carving in the traditional European fashion with Drawings by the stock maker Fritz Triebel. It is included here in it’s entirety.

The first article details a stock carving with the Roe Deer as it’s centerpiece, From the Der Waffenschmied of München and Leipzig of Jan. 1884.

The following article and image of a stock carved with a vignette of Diana, Goddess of the hunt from the periodical Der Waffenschmied published by Friedrich Brandeis of Prag in 1882.

Following is another stock carving design found in the 1886-1887 Der Waffenschmied by Fr. Bradeis of Prague.
